Roof Extension - Barbican 3

barbicanc.jpgRoof Extension in the Barbican

Wallside, Barbican, London EC2 - 2005

RIBA special issue on Housing 2006

This project developed out of the Roof Top Extension to Number 11 Wallside. The clients for Number's 15 and 16 had seen and liked that work.

However, in the interim The Barbican had been listed as Grade 2 and it was now necessary to use materials that matched the existing building e.g. - African Mahogany for the windows and doors out on to the terraces. At the same time a much better way of dealing with the existing services had presented itself and it was now possible to make them virtually invisible and thereby enjoy the full 5 metre wide view unto the terraces on both sides.

Both clients wanted Limestone Floors with underfloor heating - Limestone was also used for the Terraces - and large Plasma Screens with Surround Sound.

A French stone was used (from near Antibes in the Cote d'Azur) with butt joints.

The screens became part of a full width display wall incorporating concealed lighting, speakers and books with the Hi-Fi on the other side of the room as part of the balustrade to the stair. These were in American Walnut veneer.

The balustrade also included a small sink and glass shelves.

The project benefitted from the 2 roof tops being side by side as the Builder was able to make use of the storage space that was available along with only needing 1 set of scaffolding.
